Governor Signs Bill To Create Wildlife Crossing Fund

On March 23rd, 2023, Governor Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 72 into law. This bill creates a wildlife corridor fund and invests $5 million in state funding to help decrease wildlife-vehicle collisions. In New Mexico, there are roughly 1,200 crashes a year, costing drivers nearly $20 million in damages. The Los Alamos Daily Post published an article about the bill on March 26th, 2023 detailing several wildlife-vehicle collision hotspot locations across the state. Read the full article here.

“The creation of the Wildlife Corridor Fund is a key step forward in addressing the issues of saving the lives of humans and wildlife alike. We look forward to continuing to work with the Governor and the legislature to drastically ramp up the funding for crucial infrastructure in the minimum of 11 hotspot areas of critical need. We thank Senator Mimi Stewart for her leadership and the Governor for signing this landmark legislation.“ – Garrett VeneKlasen, Northern Conservation Director
