FULL: 3 day, 2 night Volunteer Trip in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness

Help us minimize campsite footprints in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness

From 9:00 am until 5:00 pm

At Wheeler Peak Wilderness

The Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area has seen some degradation over the years due to heavy user traffic and recent seasonal storms. Specifically, the Williams Lake and Horseshoe Lake areas have experienced heavy impacts from campsites along their shores with multiple fire rings within 300 feet of the water. Building sites this close to the water is against wilderness regulations as it can affect water quality and deter wildlife from accessing the lake as a water source. To mitigate these issues and restore this area to healthier conditions, New Mexico Wild in partnership with the Questa District of the Carson National Forest is hosting a volunteer weekend to get some of this work done! We will be dispersing and rehabilitating some of these campsites, with some possible logout and brushing trail work along the way, time allowing. Join us for a weekend of backpacking, beautiful views, and giving back to our public lands!

When: Friday, July 26th - Sunday, July 28th
Where: Williams Lake TH, Carson National Forest
Work will include:
  • A 3-day, 2-night trip into the Wheeler Peak Wilderness (camping near Williams Lake, with a possible night at Horseshoe Lake depending on our progress, ability, and weather)
  • A beautiful 2-mile hike in and out to Williams Lake.
  • Rehabilitation of approximately 20 campsites around Williams Lake
  • Likely some saw work and light trail clearing along Williams Lake Trail
Volunteers are asked to bring:
  • Camping gear (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cooking utensils, boots, etc.)
  • Work gloves (we will have some on hand, but please bring your own if able)
  • All meals (for a half day on Friday, full day on Saturday, and half to full day on Sunday)
  • A positive attitude! No previous experience is needed, all training will be provided on-site

Thanks for your interest! This event is full – please check back for future volunteer opportunities.
