Bill to fund large game animal crossings advances

 

In an article published by the Taos News on February 22, 2022, Garrett VeneKlasen, New Mexico Wild’s Northern Conservation Director, speaks on the powerful impact wildlife corridors would have on New Mexico and the importance of allocating adequate seed money towards the Create Wildlife Corridors Fund, a bill sponsored by Senator Mimi Stewart.

“In the enormity of the expense that we really need to invest in, like, yesterday, $5 million is a rounding error,” he said. “That will pay essentially for planning for one overpass, for one project. Many of us did advocate — and are still advocating at the Legislature and at the governor’s office — that, please, let’s put substantive money in this.

Wildlife corridors would bring tremendous benefits to both humans and wildlife alike. SB72 is currently making its way through the New Mexico state legislature, passing the Senate Finance Committee on February 17th and the Senate floor on February 22nd. Read the full article in the Taos News here.
