Whitewater Baldy Fire Restoration Project: Invasive Bull Thistle Removal

13Jun2025
15Jun2025

Join for either or both days!

From 9:00 am until 5:00 pm

At Willow Creek Campground in the Gila National Forest

Please join New Mexico Wild & Heart of the Gila for a weekend treating invasive bull thistle in this delicate ecosystem recovering from a major fire event. We'll be car camping in the Willow Creek area and hiking into our work site each day; please note that accessing Willow Creek requires a medium to high clearance vehicle. This project requires the ability to hike medium to long distances with elevation gain across rugged terrain and perform manual labor outdoors.

Join for either or both days! Arrive Friday evening for the full weekend, or drop in Saturday evening to work Sunday only. You can also leave after Saturday if you prefer working for one day.

Day 1, Saturday: This will be a full workday with an approach suitable for advanced and adventurous hikers (4 miles each way, 1000 ft elevation gain). We will be working on a large bull thistle infestation in the Whitewater Baldy area, and monitoring for other infestations along the way.

Day 2, Sunday: We will have a moderate hike in (1.5 mile each way, 400 feet elevation gain) to our work site on Iron Creek Lake, where we will treat a smaller bull thistle infestation along the lake perimeter. We will have an early start to ensure that we are back down at camp and ready to part ways by 1pm so folks can make their way home.
