Volunteer with NM Wild Rangers: Hermit’s Peak-Calf Canyon Trail Project – North Fork

05Sep2025
07Sep2025

From 11:00 am until 5:00 pm

Join our Ranger crew in the field and support our ongoing work restoring access to the trail system impacted by the Hermit's Peak-Calf Canyon fire. This overnight backpacking project will run Friday-Sunday, and involve clearing downfall off trails using saws and other tools, and some tread restoration as needed.
We will be gathering at the Walker Flats trailhead at 11AM on Friday, 9/5, and backpacking to our basecamp at North Fork Lake. On Saturday, we will have a full work day primarily clearing trail of downed logs, and cleaning trash around alpine lake areas. Sunday we may do a short half-day of work or just hike out, depending on the group's level of enthusiasm! We plan on having the crew back at the trailhead by 5pm at the latest on Sunday.
This will be an advanced level project; the approach to basecamp is ~4 miles, with ~2000 feet of elevation gain. We will be doing manual labor outdoors and using tools such as shovels, picks, and saws.
Please note: Walker Flats is only accessible with medium to high clearance and AWD/4WD. If you have a capable vehicle and are willing to carpool with others, please indicate this in your registration. If you do NOT have a capable vehicle but are interested in participating, please reach out to see whether carpooling options may be available-- we cannot guarantee carpooling but will do our best to facilitate arrangements!
