Volunteer while you hike!
Want to go for a hike on your own time while collecting valuable data for NM Wild and the Carson National Forest? Solitude monitoring data helps us understand the density of traffic in different areas and assess which areas might be impacted by high visitor use and in need of restoration efforts. The more data collections, the better, so this is an ongoing volunteer call that YOU can contribute to simply by going for a hike on a beautiful wilderness trail!
A solitude monitoring session consists of four hours spent hiking a trail while keeping a log of encounters with other hikers and campers, recorded on a special form we will provide you. These four hours of monitoring do not need to be continuous, but must take place between 8AM and 6PM on a given day of your choosing. If you're an avid hiker, you could opt to complete two sessions while you're out there!
Once you submit a registration form below specifying a date and trail for your session, we will reach out to you directly and provide the necessary forms and protocols.
We are currently collecting data in the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness, on the following trails:
-
Manzanita Canyon Trail #58
-
Gavilan Canyon Trail #60
-
Yerba Canyon Trail #61
-
Long Canyon Trail #63
-
Gold Hill Trail #64
-
Columbine Canyon Trail #71
Sign up for a solitude monitoring session below and we will be in touch with details and materials!
