At Iron Gate Campground in the Pecos
This season, New Mexico Wild Rangers, in partnership with the Santa Fe National Forest and other trail crews, are undertaking a trail system-wide project in the Hermit's Peak Calf Canyon burn scar within the Pecos Wilderness. As the landscape stabilizes following the impacts of this 2022 fire, the goal of this season is to restore access to high-priority trails in key recreation areas, paving the way for more in-depth maintenance in upcoming seasons.
For this project, we will be meeting and camping out of Iron Gate Campground and working on clearing Rociada Trail, clearing as much as we can of a 4-mile, 500ft elevation gain stretch between basecamp and the intersection with Valdez Trail. We will be using a two-person crosscut saw, smaller hand saws, axes, and other tools to clear downed logs and brush off of the trail corridor, always under the supervision of our Crosscut Certified Rangers. Join the New Mexico Wild crew for two nights of camping out in this iconic New Mexico wilderness and giving back to this precious recovering landscape!
*Important note: a medium to high clearance, 4WD vehicle is required to access Iron Gate Campground. If you are interested in joining but you or your group doesn't have access to a capable vehicle, please note this in your registration form. If you do have a capable vehicle and are willing to carpool with others, please let us know this as well! We will help connect folks for potential carpooling arrangements; carpooling availability is not guaranteed, but we will do our very best to facilitate everyone interested getting to the project.
