At Gila National Forest
3 day, 2 night Car Camping Trip in the Gila Wilderness – Oct 18th - 20th 2024
Join us for the second weekend of this two part project rewilding decommissioned roads to promote the recovery of crucial habitat along the San Francisco River!
The Lower San Francisco Wilderness Study Area (WSA) has seen some degradation over the years due to vehicle incursions up and down the river corridor from a lack of proper signage and barriers. In an effort to mitigate these issues and rewild this area of great ecological value, New Mexico Wild in partnership with the Glenwood Ranger District on the Gila National Forest is hosting a volunteer weekend to get some of this work done!
When: Friday Oct 18th – Sunday Oct 20th
Where: Lower San Francisco River Canyon WSA in the Gila National Forest (near Glenwood)
Work will include:

3-day, 2-night overnight camping trip into the Lower San Francisco River Canyon Wilderness Study Area (camping will be a car camp base site near the WSA boundary, accessible by passenger vehicle)

A 5-mile shuttle in and out of the project area (gear transport and shuttle support provided by the Forest Service via ATV)

Work across the two weekends will include boundary sign placement, gabion baskets rock placement to delineate where roads are closed and prevent motorized travel beyond closure, sign placement to ID open roads, trash clean up, native planting.
Volunteers are asked to bring:

Camping gear (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cooking utensils, boots, etc.)

Work gloves (we will have some on hand, but good to have a backup pair)
- All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks EXCEPT for Saturday night)
