At Gila National Forest
Join New Mexico Wild and Heart of the Gila for a guided hike through the beautiful Lower Gallinas Canyon, located in the Gila National Forest’s Inventoried Roadless Areas.
Along the way, you’ll learn about the Roadless Rule, why these protections matter for New Mexico’s wildlands, and how you can take action to help keep them in place. This is a great opportunity to connect with nature, meet fellow public-lands advocates, and experience one of the most scenic areas in the Gila.
Length: Up to 5 miles round trip, with numerous creek crossings and several rocky sections.
Difficulty: Moderately challenging
What to bring:
Plenty of water; lunch or snacks; layers for changing temperatures and unpredictable mountain weather; sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen); long pants; and closed-toe shoes suitable for hiking on uneven terrain. Hiking poles are optional.
Meeting time and location:
We’ll meet at the Gallinas Canyon 795 Trailhead (across the street from the Rabb Park Trailhead). Parking may be somewhat limited at the 795 Trailhead, but there is plenty of additional parking at Rabb Park.
