Latino Conservation Week: Backcountry Cook-Off

17Jul2021

From 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

At La Cueva Picnic Area

Join New Mexico Wild's Pecos Wilderness Ranger Isa Nellos for a Backcountry Cook-Off at the La Cueva Picnic Area in the Sandia Mountains on Saturday, July 17, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. This event is part of Latino Conservation Week 2021.

The "Backcountry Cookoff" will be an opportunity to share with Latinos how to cook and prepare meals in the outdoors. The idea of this workshop will be to educate the participants on how to pack light, nutritious, calorie-high, inexpensive, and delicious foods. Along with creative recipe ideas, we will also be talking about Leave No Trace, pack-it-in, pack-it-out ethics, and how to properly put out fires.

The setup will be made up of teams of 2-3 people who will be placed behind camping and backpacking stoves, along with recipes and directions to be followed. Each team will be cooking different meals, and as the teams finish cooking, the participants can get a taste of the variety of foods that can be made in the outdoors. We will also have designated judges who will decide what teams cooked the best meals. The top three winners will receive prizes.

Google Map directions to the La Cueva Picnic Area are available here.
