Cabezon Peak Day Project

20Jan2024

Join us for our first volunteer project of 2024 in the Cabezon & Chamisa Wilderness Study Area!

From 9:00 am until 5:00 pm

At Cabezon & Chamisa Wilderness Study Area

We're leading a project to further define the popular Sharkey Loop Trail surrounding Cabezon Peak. Several sections of this trail have become indiscernible, and we aim to help users navigate this trail with ease through the construction of cairns.

The Plan

We'll meet at the Sharkey Loop Trailhead at 9 AM. As the dirt roads in this area can get quite muddy, high-clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended. From the trailhead, we will hike the Sharkey Loop Trail, first focusing on the northern section of the trail, to construct/re-build sturdy cairns. After we wrap up, we will caravan as a group over near Barrel Springs, to a campsite that lies just within the Chamisa Wilderness Study Area. Here, a hunter’s camp was found and needs debris removal and rehabilitation of existing fire rings. After we finish rehabbing this area, we will call it a day!

Important note:  As the dirt roads in this area can get quite muddy, high-clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended.

Please bring water, sunscreen, gloves, sturdy footwear, layers, and all necessary meals. Snacks will be provided for volunteers!

Difficulty of Project: Easy-Moderate
