Our Story

The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) grassroots organization dedicated to the protection, restoration, and continued enjoyment of New Mexico’s wildlands and wilderness areas. Founded in 1997, we achieve our mission through administrative protection, federal wilderness designation, and ongoing stewardship. We have a membership of individuals from all corners of New Mexico and across the nation. Our organizing efforts span the state and involve many diverse groups, including ranchers, sportsmen, land grants, acequia communities, tribal and religious leaders, scientists, youth, and community leaders. We are the only statewide wilderness group in New Mexico with a proven track record of building diverse coalitions to protect our public lands.

We Won the Bob Marshall Wilderness Stewardship Award!

We’re proud to announce that we have been awarded the prestigious Bob Marshall Wilderness Stewardship Award, given to the groups that demonstrate

exceptional stewardship of the nation's most wild places. We want to say a big thank you to our supporters for helping us continue to protect New Mexico's Wilderness, wildlife, and water. We couldn't do any of this without your support!

The Dave Foreman Wilderness Defenders Program

In the spirit of legendary conservationist and New Mexico Wild Co-Founder Dave Foreman's love of wild places, volunteer participants in our Wilderness Defender program cultivate relationships with designated natural areas in New Mexico, helping to monitor Wilderness values and conditions.

The information they collect is incredibly valuable as we continue to advocate for greater levels of protection. With more than 36 million acres of public land in the state, we can use as many boots on the ground as possible.
