Winter Solstice at Chaco Canyon

Upcoming Events
Dates: 2016-12-20 - 2016-12-22

Place: Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Join us for three days in the Chaco Canyon region as we experience astroarcheology in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, explore the strange formations of the Ah-shi-sle-pah Wilderness Study Area, and hike the Bisti-de-na-zin Wilderness in search of petroglyphys, paleontology, and otherworldly landscape features.

Chacoan structures are known for their connection to the stars. Several features within the park are known to track seasonal shifts using light markers during signficant annual solar events. The winter solstice is one day of the calendar year when these light markers are visible, providing visitors an excellent opportunity to connect with ancient peoples through firsthand experience of Chacoan solar calendars in action.

Tuesday, December 20: We will depart Albuquerque at 10:00 AM and drive to the Ah-shi-sle-pah Wilderness Study Area. We'll stretch our legs here as we explore this area's strange formations before heading to our camp at Chaco Culture National Historical Park for dinner, a campfire, and stargazing.

Wednesday, December 21 (Winter Solstice): We'll wake early for a hike to Kin Klesto, one of Chaco's known astroarcheological sites, for a view of the solar calendar in action. After Kin Klesto, we'll return to camp for breakfast, pack our hiking gear, and head out to the Bisti-de-na-zin Wilderness for a day of exploration. The otherworldly landscape of the Bisti badlands is littered with paleontological features and unusual formations. We'll end the Solstice with a sunset hike to another of Chaco's astroarcheological sites, dinner and a campfire at camp, and evening astronomy at the park visitor center.

Thursday, December 22: The morning will be spent exploring Chaco Canyon with hikes, sightseeing, and other activities available. We'll depart for Albuquerque around 1pm and should arrive back in the city around 4pm.
