Visit the Badlands!

In order to educate the public on just how unique and important the Badlands are, the San Juan Badlands Coalition is leading many public outings throughout October and November, 2010. CLICK HERE for a schedule of hikes, directions to the Badlands locations, and a map of the areas in question.

Protocol:

  1. Open to membership of all Coalition Members and interested general public. Limit of 25 people for each hike. No children or pets.
  2. First come first serve: reserve your spot by emailing Mike Richie at mrichie@comcast.net, with your name, the number of hikers in your party and the date and hike you want.
  3. I’ll email you the meeting place and time and the release form which you need to sign and bring with you.

Difficulty Scale:

The advanced, medium, and easy scale assures that all hikers can experience the badlands at appropriate endurance and experience levels. These are all cross-country hikes, meaning no trails. Instead we will be making our own path across rugged terrain sometimes involving nontechnical “climbing” or scrambling as it is often called. While the distances covered and elevation changes will not be especially large, cross country travel and even short descents and ascents over steep, unpredictable terrain can be tiring and lead to accidents for inexperienced hikers.

Advanced: For very fit and experienced hikers, able to hike for 4-5 hours over rough cross-country routes with significant scrambling.

Medium: For reasonably fit and experienced hikers, able to hike 3-4 hours over rough terrain with a little scrambling.

Easy: Open to anyone who can hike for 2-3 hours over level cross country routes.
