Stephen Capra-
Executive Director
After a career in private industry and journalism, Mr. Capra has worked nearly full time for wilderness conservation since 1988. As outreach coordinator on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for the Wilderness Society he hiked from Mexico to Canada, giving scores of press conferences and speeches to draw attention to the fight to protect this special place. Mr. Capra also worked for the Arizona Wilderness Coalition as its media coordinator before joining NMWA’s staff in 2001. Craig Chapman-
Special Events Coordinator
Mr. Chapman comes to the environmental community after 25 years in sales and marketing in the banking industry. Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, he spent his early years as a military brat following his father around the world. Craig has lived in New Mexico for over 20 years settling down in New Mexico because of his love of the Mountains. He is an active Ski Patroller and also has a passion for mountain biking, which he does to stay in shape for skiing. Craig has brought a new perspective to NMWA coming from the private sector. Demis Foster-
Community Partnership Director
Ms. Foster comes to NMWA from the Pacific Northwest with over 15 years of experience building wide-spread support for campaigns to protect air quality, municipal watersheds, ancient and roadless forests and wildlife habitat. Ms. Foster is responsible for recruiting 10,000 donors to the Cascades Conservation Partnership, a campaign that inspired people to donate nearly $16 million in private donations and leverage $68 million in public funds to save 45,000 acres of land in the Cascades. She is also known for driving across the U.S. with a 1,000 pound crosscut from a 450-year old Douglas Fir tree while directing the Ancient Forest Roadshow, a year-long nationwide media and outreach campaign that helped to raise awareness for the plight of ancient forests. Ms. Foster is based in NMWA’s Santa Fe office with a special focus on the Chaco Canyon campaign and statewide fundraising efforts. Please contact Demis at demis@nmwild.org.

Rachel Freund-
Information Technologies Intern
Rachel is happy to provide support for NMWA’s websites, GIS/GPS, databases, emails and action campaigns, and anything else she’s allowed to tinker with. She recently worked on riparian restoration and invasive plant management at National Wildlife Refuges in New Mexico, and hails from California where she held jobs in urban forestry, forest conservation, wilderness inventory, and desert restoration. Trisha London-
Membership & Grassroots Assistant
Ms. London manages our Albuquerque office. She was a Park Guide and Interpretive Specialist with the National Park Service at the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument for several years. Trisha is skilled in public speaking, graphic design, and native plant identification. She was also an active NMWA volunteer prior to joining the NMWA staff. Kim McCreery-
Silver City Regional Director
Based in Silver City, Dr. McCreery recently joined the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance to expand our wilderness protection efforts in southwestern New Mexico. Kim has a multidisciplinary degree focusing on conservation biology and wildlife ecology from the University of California, Davis. Having lived and worked in Africa for years to help protect the endangered African wild dog, she has extensive experience in research, public relations, grassroots facilitation, and community-based education. She has worked in the field in the Boot Heel of New Mexico, the Sonoran Desert, and the oak woodland/grasslands of California. Kim is passionate about wilderness and human-wildlife co-existence. Leona Morgan-
Indigenous Nations Outreach Coordinator/Liaison
Leona is Dine’ from the Navajo Nation. She has a Bachelors of Fine Art from UNM, with two majors in Art Studio and Native American Studies. She has been involved in Environmental Justice work as a volunteer, organizer, educator, public speaker, lobbyist and [recently] amateur film-maker/producer with several NM organizations since 2004. The focus of much her work is on uranium mining issues in Indigenous communities to protect the peoples, plants, animals, land, water and Sacred Sites from contamination and related issues. Nathan Newcomer-
Associate Director
Mr. Newcomer began as an intern with NMWA in 2001, then transitioned into the full-time Grassroots Organizer and Media Director in 2004. Now he is the Associate Director of the organization. Nathan is also the guy behind the creative computer work, producing all of NMWA’s multi-media presentations and DVD’s. John Olivas-
Northern NM Director
Mr. Olivas has an Undergraduate Degree in Biology and a Masters Degree in Environmental Science from New Mexico Highlands University. He is currently managing partner and owner of JACO Outfitters, LLC who specializes in guided hunting and fishing trips throughout New Mexico.
John is Mora County Commissioner Elect for Dist 2. John has worked in the federal sector with the USFWS as a Fisheries Biologist with the Mora Fish Hatchery and Technology Center as well as the private sector as an engineer with Intel Corporation in Rio Rancho.
He is a past Board Member for the Sant Getrudis de lo de Mora Land Grant and is very active in the state wide Land Grant efforts here in New Mexico. Please contact John at john@nmwild.org.

Nathan Small-
Wilderness Protection Organizer
Mr. Small is a native New Mexican, but came to NMWA after graduating from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH. He coordinates tabling for NMWA, and leads Wilderness Protection efforts for National Forest and National Park Service lands. Jeff Steinborn-
Southern NM Director
Mr. Steinborn comes to the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance with a wealth of experience in and out of government. He previously served as an advisor to both U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman and then Congressman Bill Richardson. As Senator Bingaman’s former advisor to the Otero Mesa, Jeff was a strong proponent of protecting this key resource, and played a vital role in helping to guide strategy. He was born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell for high school, graduating on the Dean’s academic list. Roger Turner-
Membership & Volunteer Coordinator
Mr. Turner joined the NMWA staff after years of grassroots environmental work as western Field Organizer with the Western North Carolina Alliance. This work included the preservation of areas within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other public lands in the southern Appalachian Mountains, threatened by sprawl development and interstate highway construction.
He was also lead negotiator for the Alliance in a four-year cooperative stake-holders process for the federal relicensing of hydro-electric dams operated by Duke Energy. He and his wife, Louise, co-owned and founded Lulu’s Café in Sylva, North Carolina, which introduced tofu and hummus (and other “California” food) into the local area. Steve West-
Staff Scientist
Mr. West, the former Mayor of Loving, NM, a former Army officer, and former Science teacher at Carlsbad High School has joined the staff of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance. Mr. West has a Masters in Science from New Mexico Tech and comes to the organization as its Staff Scientist. Mr. West is also an accomplished author with more than 50 articles and reports published in science journals and other periodicals. Additionally, he has been studying grassland bird species in southern New Mexico for several decades, including extensive bird surveys on Otero Mesa. As part of his work on the Chihuahuan desert, Mr. West wrote and published a book entitled: “Northern Chihuahuan Desert Wildflowers: A Field Guide to Wildflowers and Other Plants of the Desert and its parklands.” Please contact Steve at stevewest@nmwild.org.
