Chaco Canyon is one of many unique areas the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is working to protect in our Land of Enchantment Wilderness Proposal.
This historical center of ceremony and trade for the Ancestral Puebloan People houses the greatest array of ancient architecture north of Mexico. While Chaco Canyon’s cultural and natural resources have earned it National Historical Park and World Heritage Site status, this is not enough to protect against continued threats from oil and gas development.
Oil and gas drilling on state lands within view of the park’s visitor center remains a harsh possibility. Chacoan ruins on BLM lands north of the park are equally vulnerable to development. Oil field dust, air pollutants and noise are real threats to the park and jeopardize health of nearby communities.

Our proposal for the Chaco Canyon Wilderness would form a connective corridor to the Bisti / De-Na-Zin Wilderness.
NMWA is currently working with Senator Bingaman to introduce legislation that would permanently protect the Park, but we need your help.
