NM Wild Movie Night #2: The Unforeseen

Join us for a screening of The Unforeseen on February 15,

Tuesday, from 7-9 PM at O’Niell’s Pub on Central in Albuquerque.

The Unforeseen, directed by Texan film maker Laura Dunn, is an apocalyptic “man versus nature” eco-documentary. The setting is 1990’s Austin, Texas where powerful forces are gathering: interests intent on selling the “American dream,” and interests intent on preserving a piece of “Eden,” the city’s beloved Barton Springs, a popular swimming and recreation area.

The springs are part of a precious fresh-water aquifer, a river-fed island of green, now threatened by a sprawling real estate boom. The film describes the fight to save Barton Springs, pitting the sanctity of private property versus the long-term health of the land.

Through its transfixing glimpses of the natural world and an agrarian lifestyle at risk, The Unforeseen ponders nothing less than what happens when we turn our backs on the divine. The title for the movie comes from Wendell Berry’s poem, “Santa Clara Valley:”

“I walked the deserted prospect of the modern mind
Where nothing lived or happened that had not been foreseen.
What had been foreseen was the coming of the Stranger with Money.”

NM-Wild’s Winter Film series ends with a benefit screening of Lonely Are the Brave on March 16 at the Guild Cinema. The evening includes a presentation by Dave Foreman and Jack Loeffler on the life and times of Ed Abbey. Film events are free and donations are appreciated.
