Right now, the Martinez cabinet and Congressman Pearce are actively opposing environmental protections in New Mexico and threatening our state’s remaining wild lands. The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is working 24/7 to protect and defend wild lands in our state, but we need your continued support.

Your Donation Will Help Us Fight Hardrock Mining in Otero Mesa.
For years, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance has led ongoing efforts to protect Otero Mesa, our nation’s last great desert grassland. We helped win the Supreme Court decision in 2009 that temporarily halted oil and gas drilling on the Mesa.
Now, a new threat imperils Otero Mesa– hardrock mining. Over 50 new mining claims have been staked in the heart of the BLM-managed Otero Mesa region, by Geovic, Inc., majority owner of the world’s largest cobalt-producing operation in Cameroon, Africa. The company seeks to mine rare earth minerals. Mining operations would severely degrade wildlife habitat and the aquifer beneath Otero Mesa.
The staff at NM Wild is mobilizing ever-greater support to protect Otero Mesa from immanent threats. “Without the permanent protection that it deserves, Otero Mesa is always going to be one drill bit, one mine shaft, or one spill away from being lost to us,” said Nathan Newcomer, Associate Director of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance. “This new threat of hardrock mining in Otero Mesa, underscores the urgency of providing permanent protection for this wild and beautiful grassland.”
