CELEBRATE NATIONAL ROADLESS RECREATION WEEK WITH NMWA

AUGUST 7-15, 2010

New Mexico is home to 1.6 million acres of Roadless Areas. These wild regions provide unparalleled recreational opportunities to those willing to venture forth! During National Roadless Recreation Week, explore Roadless Areas with NMWA through a variety of activities being held throughout the state. Stay tuned– further events in the Santa Fe and Silver City areas TBA!

August 7
Columbine-Hondo Day Hike

Hike with NMWA staff member John Olivas and discover the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area northeast of Taos, New Mexico. The trip will include a visit to Goose Lake and will be filled with spectacular scenery, from the Taos Ski Valley to Wheeler Peak Wilderness. The Columbine-Hondo Wilderness is a wild mountain basin boasting one of the healthiest mountain watersheds in the region.

August 7
Manzano Mountains Service Project

Team up with members from NMWA’s UNM Chapter to help monitor and improve the beautiful Manzano Wilderness. Volunteers will help the Cibola National Forest with their wilderness monitoring program.
Hike trails in the Manzano Wilderness to assess campsite and visitation impacts to the area, and contribute to a baseline for future decisions on how we protect our wilderness. Volunteers receive training on using Trimble GPS units and performing assessments.

August 14th
Magdalena Mountains Geology Hike
Follow NMWA Board member Rick Aster on a day hike and geological tour of the calderas, canyons and volcanic crests of the Magdalena Mountains Roadless Area. The group will meet at 8:15 am at the parking lot at Water Canyon Campground. The 4-mile road to Water Canyon CG is off Highway 60 approximately 15 miles west of Socorro.

August 14-15
Elk Mountain Service Project
Help NMWA and the US Forest Service close unauthorized ATV shortcuts on Elk Mountain, a landmark in the Santa Fe National Forest. This is the second year NMWA volunteers have worked to heal the mountain.
