THE PLACE : Windmill Canyon. Warm up as we head to the famed Florida Mountains in southwest New Mexico. This is a Wilderness Study Area with incredible qualities, ranging from ancient rock art to stunning views, rare wildlife, and hidden riparian areas. We’ll see the Florida Mountains—a rugged refuge for many, including the Apache—in the clear and comfortable January air. Our trip will include a visit to Windmill Canyon.
The Florida Mountains are approximately four hours from Albuquerque, one hour from Las Cruces—please know that we will leave for this walk very early to allow ample time to do the walk. For those driving from Albuquerque, please plan on spending the night in Las Cruces or Deming. We can help find rooms for those interested. Meet in Las Cruces or Deming for caravan to site.

DIFFICULTY : Moderate. As we go higher, the walking gets harder, but our objective for this first walk is a moderate exploration of this delightful desert mountain canyon.
