CHANGE OF PROJECT IN GALISTEO BASIN – MAY 8th
Due to a delay in receiving camera equipment, the Wildlife Camera Trap
Monitoring Project Scheduled for May 8th, in Galisteo, has been changed
to a Wildlife Relocation and Monitoring Project. Please see details below.
PLACE: Galisteo Community Center, Village of Galisteo, New Mexico
(Turn on road across from the Catholic Church on NM41 in
center of Galisteo. Take road straight across wooden bridge and bear
right at fork in the road. Continue a few hundred feet until you see the Fire
Station on the left. The Community Center is the next building on your
left and has its own parking lot.)
DATE & TIME: Saturday, May 8, 2010 9:00 to 3:00
Schedule -
Meet at Galisteo Community Center at 9:00 a.m.
Presentation on Gunnison’s Prairie Dog relocation site expansion and
monitoring.
Volunteers help construct “nesting boxes” that will go into artificial
burows on site during land prep for the site expansion in late May.
Lunch
Drive out to Relocation Site at 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers will be asked to sign a waiver since the site is on private land.
We will walk a 1/4 mile to the site and check/feed each prairie dog
burrow and complete monitoring sheets. Part of monitoring is checking
for predator presence, so we will note any raptors or coyotes (no
reptiles or badgers have been seen on site to date). Taking note of
other wildlife is also important and any sign, scat or tracks will be
recorded.
3:00 – Sign ups provided for any volunteers interested in coming back to
help with the nesting box installation in May and/or the release of the
prairie dogs thereafter.
EQUIPMENT: Please bring gloves as we will be cutting hardware cloth, andtin cutters and pliers if you have them. Please come dressed for a hikewith water, hat, sunscreen, heavy shoes/boots for when we visit thesite. Binoculars are a good idea too.
We look forward to a beautiful day in Galisteo and helping with thetime consuming process of successfully preparing a new home site forSanta Fe’s Gunnisons! See you on the 8th!
