Elk Mountain Volunteer Service Project

THE PLACE: Elk Mountain in the Santa Fe National Forest, just minutes north of the town of Pecos, gateway to the Pecos Wilderness.

THE PROJECT: NMWA has worked hard with various coalitions over the past two years on the travel management issue in the Santa Fe National Forest. The fruits of the coalition’s labors are about to be made available to the public. The travel management maps for the Santa Fe National Forest are finally to be published in late 2010 or early 2011. We will work with the Forest Service, specifically Sarah Naegele of the Pecos /Las Vegas Ranger District, on building fencing to protect a meadow and prevent use of illegal shortcuts on switchbacks. Last year we closed five shortcuts on the switchbacks and denied access to a fairly substantial meadow. There is much more to do. Once the MVUMs are published, NMWA will come back to Elk Mountain every summer until we have protected the area from unauthorized ORV uses.
