Big Bend National Park Volunteer Service Project

THE PLACE: Big Bend National Park

THE PRO JECT: On Saturday, volunteers will go to the North Rosillos area in Big Bend National Park. This is an area that was added to the park in the 1980s and that has the potential for being pristine grassland. Historically it was overgrazed, but we will be working to correct that. We will spend Saturday under the direction and assistance of National Park Service staff in spreading native seeds and hydromulch. On Sunday, until about noon, we will be working again with Park Service staff in proposed Wilderness areas to remove the exotic grass species buffelgrass. At both sites, on Saturday and on Sunday, we will be keeping a list of all plant and animal species observed, and these will be submitted to the Park Service for their files and to our own biodiversity survey at www.nmwild.org.
